Road Trip from Lubbock

Here’s part two of our Southwest Snowball Mess story. We were in Lubbock visiting the grandkids three days and departed Friday morning for our road trip home.  Grandpa and I decided to visit small towns along the way looking for ideas for a future weekend visit.

Thursday we planned a scavenger adventure called Let’s Roam Scavenger Hunt – Lubbock. The app was confusing at first but I figured it out toward the end of the hunt. I had bought one ticket for Grandpa and me to share using my phone.  Next time, I will order individual tickets so we can search clues independently. You can walk or drive to each location.  Also, this hunt is geared for adults or older children.  We took two of our young grandchildren (4 & 6 yrs) and they were bored. They kept asking when were we going to eat. LOL. Along the hunt, we discovered the Cactus Theater. We will have to catch a show at this theater on our next trip to Lubbock.

One of the finds on the Scavenger Hunt was the Cactus Theater.

We have explored Lubbock before and I recommend several favorites.  At the American Windmill Museumthey have a fun activity for the family. In one of the large rooms, they have a huge mural with hidden images. Be sure to ask for a list and start your search!  If you remember Buddy Holly, you will enjoy the Buddy Holly Center. My personal favorite is Prairie Dog TownThe prairie dogs are so cute to watch. They scurry all around the park, popping up and down their burrows.  Pack a picnic lunch for yourself, and bring some peanuts for them. You can also walk around Texas Tech University and see the free public art at TT Public Art Collection. Last but not least, visit the Science Spectrum Museum.

Friday, our first stop was at the Visitor’s Center | Big Spring to get pamphlets. We decided to have lunch at the Settles Grill in the beautiful historical Hotel Settles

Next, we went the Comanche-Trail-Park.  It’s a nice family-friendly weekend trip. I would like to come back for the “Lighted Poinsettia Capital of Texas” where they display lighted red flowers nightly 6pm – 10pm from December 4 to December 25.

After visiting the park, we drove further to San Angelo, TX for the night. We have been here before.  I would suggest checking out the beautiful Concho River Walk. Look at the Sheep Tour Brochure. We like dining at Twisted Root Burger Co.  The Dallas location appeared on the second season of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri.

On Saturday, December 31 we left San Angelo headed for Georgetown, TX. We drove into Brady, which is a town we’ve never been to. We drove around looking for historical markers. Brady is bigger than I thought it would be. We will have to come back.  Visit Brady.

Our next stop was in Llano, known as “The Deer Capital of Texas.” We had lunch at Cooper BBQ Llano.  It’s a must stop while visiting Llano. Barbecue is expensive, but worth it.

We have been to Llano before but had to stop at the Llano River. Watching the water flow and hearing it crash over the rocks is so calming for me.

I would recommend visiting the Crawfish Festival 3rd Friday & Saturday of April! The Starry Nights Lighted Christmas Park is nice. The Llano Earth Art Fest is March 24 – 26.

Back on the road, we stopped in Burnet, TX known as the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas. We wanted to check out more historical markers. I wish we could have spent more time here. Check out Attractions & Recreation – Burnet Chamber of Commerce

Next, we drove into Georgetown. This was our first time here. It’s called “The Most Beautiful Town Square” and was charming. We explored a few historical markers and found “Three Legged Willie” again. There are shops, restaurants and they have a piano bar. We will definitely be back.

Check out the Red Poppy Festival, Blue Hole Park, Inner Space Cavern and visit the Townsquare. These are on our bucket list.

The marker will commemorate the 1923-24 trials prosecuted by county District Attorney Dan Moody and his team. The cases are widely considered the first successful prosecution of Klan members in the United States.

It was New Years Eve, we went to our hotel for the evening. Grandpa wanted to watch the Fiesta and the Peach Bowl. I told him, I’m not watching two football games! But I got into them both and was cheering for the TCU Frogs and Georgia Bulldogs in their respective games. After the games, I was able to watch some of the New Years Eve activities on TV. That was our wild New Year’s Eve.

January 1, 2023, we finished the remaining drive home. Home Sweet Home.  We had Southwest Airline bumps but we made lemonade with lemons and created new memories.
