Lubbock Trip

We flew to Lubbock for our oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation on May 24. In between grandchildren kisses and hugs, we squeezed in some touring.

It’s my “Grandma Tradition” to always get ice cream with my grandchildren. On this visit, Grandpa and I took five (of our nine) grandchildren ages 8, 7, 5, 2, and 1 to Holly Hop Ice Cream Shoppe. It’s a vintage-style malt shop and soda fountain place with 32 ice cream varieties.

The kids also wanted hot dogs so I ordered some. Hot dogs for me are traditionally Texas chili style with everything on it. When their food arrived, the kids were shocked to find their dogs fully loaded. They wouldn’t eat it. I had to order them grilled cheese sandwiches instead. They had zero complaints about the ice cream.

Thank goodness I only ordered 2 hot dogs instead of 4.

The next day, we had lunch at Cooks Garage restaurant. It has a nice atmosphere with vintage memorabilia and the food was good. They have outside music events throughout the year.

After lunch we went to FiberMax Center a museum of American agriculture. This museum was good and family-friendly. We enjoyed learning about the evolution of agriculture in the region, including how cotton was harvested and about irrigation systems. The kids enjoyed the tractors and a mooing dairy cow that could be “milked”. It’s a must go see.

Next, we drove around looking for murals. 10 Instagram Murals in Lubbock. We finished the day at Texas Tech for my granddaughter’s graduation, a proud moment for our family.

The mural is full of popular places and historical significance’s to the city.

The following afternoon, we went to view prairie dogs again at Prairie Dog Town. They are so cute and I love watching them scurry everywhere. Some people bring lunch and watch the prairie dogs.

Next, we went to National Ranching Heritage Center on the Texas Tech campus. The inside museum is small but the outside Foy Proctor Historical Park is large. It was quite hot so perhaps this is something we will plan another time when it’s cooler.

We wanted to take an art cart tour of Texas Tech’s Public Art Collection but guided tours must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. They do offer self-guided tours using their ArTTrek app. But we prefer guided tours, so maybe next time.

For our final day in Lubbock, I did not have anything planned. However our grandchildren were waiting for the next adventure and expecting to have some fun. So we took them to Main Event – Lubbock. The kids loved the bowling and were very competitive. We created great memories with our grandchildren. We are always sad to leave them but look forward to the next time.
